Gender & Ethnicity in Everyday Life

Although students are aware of cultural beliefs about different social groups (e.g., women, men, various ethnic groups), helping them see how these beliefs impact their lives as individuals is often challenging. This project develops three tools intended to address this challenge: 1) a collection of timely and engaging digitized video clips that illustrate central concepts in psychology of gender; 2) a web-based survey that captures concepts covered in Psychology of Gender (Psyc 360) that will be given on the first day of class and yield illustrations gleaned from the students' own responses throughout the semester; and 3) blocks of randomly sampled 5 minute digitized video clips from media sources purported to be purveyors of gender and ethnic stereotypes that students can use to discover the validity of such assertions for themselves.
